1. Equilibrium
2. Disruption
3. Realisation
4. Restored order
5. Equilibrium again
This theory applies to my trailer as this is the general layout to every story generally follows these steps. Although as ours is a trailer it will not apply to all of these steps and will most likely be the first two steps that are more included and maybe parts of the third step to leave the audience wanting more and will persuade them to want to watch the film. I feel that this approach is a bit generic as it just simply states the general steps in a story which don't always apply to every story.
Barthes
- Hermeneutic code - voice of the truth
- Enigma code - tension is built
- Senamatic code - voice of a person, additional meaning
- Symbolic code - deeper meaning
- Cultural code - looks at audiences wider knowledge
The enigma code will be fundamental to our trailer as it the building of tension which is vital to making a good horror trailer. Also, the symbolic code will be used as there will be a deeper meaning and a hidden message to our story, although this will be hard to portray in a trailer as it is mainly the general plot and not the whole story. I feel this approach is good as I also agree that these codes will all be included into any narrative and would be included in mine if it was a whole story, although this is the negative as mine is just a trailer so all of these codes do not apply.
His theory is that there are binary oppositions - this is that everything has an opposite eg; hot and cold
He also invented mythemes which he found always have an opposite
Critics of this view say that their is also a middle to the two opposites eg; hot and cold has warm
This theory applies to my trailer as ours includes a binary opposition of good vs evil and normal vs paranormal and there is a battle of these two differences. I feel this is a good theory as it does explain a lot because almost everything has an opposite and it applies well to our story. Although this theory isn't so good as it not everything has an opposite and there is also a middle to every opposite almost on a scale.

Lyotard
There is always a grand narrative - a message to the story eg; tragedy - from bad flaws from humans
This theory applies to our trailer as there is a hidden message to our story although it is hard to portray this as we do not have a full story. This theory is good because it can be applied to almost every genre of film and specifically applies to horror as they usually have a hidden message of overcoming fears in your life.
Campbell
- The ordinary world
- Call to adventure
- Refusal to the call
- Meeting with the mentor
- Crossing the threshold
- Tests, allies and enemies
- Approach
- Ordeal
- Reward
- Road back
- Resurrection
- Return with the elixir
The Hero's Journey - steps in a story
This theory is similar to Todarov's as it too follows the steps in a story. Although this is more detailed and although some steps do apply like the ordinary world and the call to adventure, the rest of them aren't really included in a trailer. Also, this theory normally applies to films with a hero for example Star Wars (which this theory evolved from).
