Editing

Editing is a very fundamental part of film trailers, this is because it sets the mood and the pace of the film. Also, it has to be done well in order to make it look realistic and believable to the audience, and it has to be relate well to the chosen genre, in my case horror which is usually fast paced, with many jump cuts. Quick cuts and lots of short snappy shots will be very important part of my editing to make sure it has a quick pace and builds up tension well.

Order of shots
The order of shots can have a big impact on the meaning, if two shots are straight after each other then it is believed that they are related. Still important to keep it in order even in a trailer so that it doesn't get confusing for the audience.

Continuity
The shots need to be cut in a way that tells the narrative. There needs to be a smooth flow from shot to shot to ensure the narrative isn't interrupted. Although as I am doing a trailer this isn't as necessary as I can simply jump cut from scene to scene, but there does still need to be a continuity of some sort to make sure it isn't too confusing.

Continuity techniques
-180 degree rule
-Establishing shot
-Shot reverse shot
-Eyeline graphic and action match

Non-continuity techniques
-Superimposition
-Jump cuts
Cutaways

Shot duration
If there is a small shot durations then it is for action and urgency, this will be used in my trailer as there is it creates tension and urgency with a quick pace. Long shot duration is used to create a slower pace and intimacy in the narrative.

Transition techniques
-Fade in/out
-Dissolve/cross fade
-Superimposition
-Wipe
The reasons for these transitions are to signify a change of time or location and can be used to show a connection between two scenes.

Notes
-Editing is primarily about narrative, connection between editing

-Eye line match - inside on characters thoughts
-What character will be in the last shot? What message wants to be portrayed
-Intercutting - juxtaposition of opposites (values, events etc.)
-Jump cuts - chaos or disorder
-Ellipses - drawing attention to rapid pace of action
-Pace of editing - can imply character qualities
-How much screen time - how important
-Shot reverse shot - indicate relationship - closeness or opposition
