Annabelle: Creation trailer 2
I have chosen to analyse this film trailer as it is quite different to the previous two so that I can get some ideas from different types of horror trailers.

The first thing that I like about this trailer is right at the start there are a series of very fast jump cuts with fade in and outs used. Also, straight away action is happening with a women being forcefully thrown into the wall, this is good because it entices the audience into wanting to know why and what is causing this and it also puts the audience on their toes from the immediate jump scare.
There is a lot of effective camera angles and movements in this trailer. One of the movements that is used is pan, this is very effective because it looks very professional and makes the short jump cuts flow very smoothly and professionally. Another movement that is also used is zooming in and out, these are both used to highlight emotion and show how important something is, an example of this is when the camera zooms into the doll's face to scare the audience, this highlights the doll's importance in the evil things that are occurring. Another good camera angle that is used the close up, this clearly shows the characters emotion and links clearly to Hitchcock's theory, it is also very clever because the audience is unaware of what is going on around the character so it builds up tension very well. Also most of the time when the doll is shown on the camera, a high angle shot is used on her, this goes against the forms and conventions of the horror genre as this portrays her to be vulnerable, when this clearly isn't the case, despite this the opposite does work very well because it shows how something that is so small and innocent can have such power.
The use of sound is also very good in this trailer. One of the key things that I like about it is the narration over the top of what s happening. I feel this gives makes it much easier for the audience to understand the narrative, the voice used is the mother of the children and quite a spooky tone is used to frighten the audience which also builds up tensions before something scary happens. Also the use of spooky 'whooshing' and piano type sounds as the camera fades into the next shot is very effective in creating tensions and scaring the audience. Another good use of sound is when the jump scare of the little girl screaming is intensified by a non-diegetic scream being put over the top to increase the volume and unnerve the audience.
The editing is very efficient in this trailer, the constant use of fade in and outs creates tension very well as it leaves you wondering what could be next while the fade is happening. The shot duration varies very effectively also, the short shots show the action and urgency and the longer takes build up the tension before something happens. Obviously the continuity of the trailer is quite non-continuous because it is a trailer, but it is still done in a way that the narrative is clear (very important for my trailer). There is also a very good establishing shot to show the whole of the big building they are in, /i feel this is good because it clearly shows the audience where the film is based and I feel that this is a good technique that I could use for my trailer.
In summary, this is a very good film trailer. The one thing that I do not like is that it does mainly follow all the forms and conventions of the horror genre, and I feel to make it successful you also need to go against some too to make it interesting and unique because if not then it is just the same as a lot of other horror films which will decrease the audience numbers. That is why I like the fact they use high angle shots on the antagonist because this goes against the forms and conventions and this I feel worked very well.
