Forms and conventions of film trailers

Film production logos
Using this will be make my work look more professional and give the audience a sense of familiarity with my work. Promotes the production company and creates a clear brand image.

Film title
This will promote the film and make sure the audience know what it is called and can be familiar with it.

Age certification
Shown towards the end of a film trailer, shows what age people can watch the film, each level links to the swearing, violence, nudity etc. of the film.

Social media
A new convention is to add things like hashtags and Facebook links, this encourages the audience to find out more information about the film and give it more popularity on these social media pages to get it more publicity.

Character introductions
Informing to the audience of the names of the actors, this is essential as if it is a well-known actor or not the audience could relate to the actor(s) from his other films and want to watch this film because of that.

Music and voice-overs
Music is key to film trailers as it clearly portrays the pace, genre and often budget of the film, bigger film companies use famous artists to make music for the film to give it more popularity. The voice over guides the audience through the film plot and gives information of the characters involved, voice over can be either from the actual film or added on top of footage. Also it is common to say "coming to a cinema near you" to make sure the audience know where they can watch the film.

Name captions
Name captions of either the actor's, director's or producer's name is essential as it the audience become familiar with their type of film style and this decided whether or not they would want to see it.

Time length
There are usually a number of different trailers for a film but an official film trailer which usually lasts from 1.5 to 2 minutes depending on the genre eg; horror films usually shorter.I have recently researched the suitable length for film trailers to make sure that mine is the right length and can plan the rough shot length to ensure I include the necessary information.

The maximum length of a film trailer is 2 minutes 30 seconds. This is the cap on film trailer length by MPAA. This is good because it allows me to film quite a bit and narrow it down only using the best shots and clips to entice the audience. Also from this research I can see that horror film trailers are generally the shortest length of film trailers, so I need to take this into consideration when making mine. From this the average length is 1 minute 54 seconds and from another source the best length is 1 minute 30 to 2 minutes. I need to ensure that my film trailer is in this time bracket and if not just under as I said before horror trailers are usually shorter.

Release date
Essential in getting a large audience to the opening night of the film release, should be at least two weeks before the film release as it gives time for a large number of people to see it and arrange to go and see it once it comes out.

Plot summary
Outlining the general plot of the film gives the audience a chance to know whether or not they want to see it or not, sometimes things like cliffhangers are used to engage the audience and make sure they want to know what happens.
